Meditation & Mindfulness
Meditation is often misperceived as something taboo, cult-like, religious, or just weird to many people! It can be a huge game changer though, the life-changing type of thing. It can bring a calm to your whole being, something to help you set your crazy aside when you get riled up.
In the midst of movement and chaos, keep stillness inside of you -Deepak Chopra
Where to begin though, eh? You don’t need to sit in a draped room with lit candles to meditate, although you can if that’s your jam! You can literally do it anywhere, there’s even walking/running mediations now, for the multitaskers. I’ll share 3 main meditation categories, as well as more in-depth blog posts about different forms of meditation. Even just 5 minutes a day can get you headed to a new world. I like to set new meditation goals/challenges each month for myself, and will share posts about new challenges regularly for anyone that would like to join me!
3 Main Meditation Styles
1) Focused Attention-
This form of meditation involves focusing your attention on something, a word or your breath, etc, and bouncing your thoughts away. It’s thought of as an active meditation, as you’re continually focusing, and actively repelling thoughts. This meditation style helps to reach a deep state of peace, and can help in concentration and decision making ability.
2) Open Monitoring-
Here you’re simply observing thoughts as they come and go, without reaction, letting them flow freely without trying to focus on them or repel them. You’re observing breath, body, thoughts, emotion, simply letting it flow. This form of meditation can help you respond to various stimuli more calmly/be less reactive and to be more mindful, centered and present.
3) Automatic Self Transcending-
In this style of meditation, you’re not focusing on anything or passively observing either. Here you’re transcending thoughts, rather than focusing on repelling them or observing them float away. You’re going beyond the thoughts, to an enlightened state, connecting to the energy of being, rather than thinking. This meditative state requires the least effort and is touted as having extraordinary results, particularly in Transcendental Meditation(TM). I have tried all types of meditation, and believe that they are all transformative and add value to your life. Transcendental meditation has been my focus of study this year and is very intriguing. I highly recommend researching each style, trying as many as you’d like to find the best fit for your well being. I will post blog updates on my most recent study of transcendental meditation, my one on one training from a certified TM instructor and the benefits/results for me personally.
